Before it was made a national park, Kuno was a sanctuary. In 1981, an area of 344.68 square kilometers was earmarked for it. Later this area was increased.
Sheopur is a tribal-dominated district. The villages around the national park are mainly inhabited by Bhil and Sahariya tribes.
Kuno National Park Cheetahs
Kuno National Park of Madhya Pradesh has the honor of becoming the only cheetah safari in the country. Cheetahs, which were declared extinct from our country in 1952, can now be seen here again.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi released eight African cheetahs from Namibia in Kuno-Palpur National Park in Madhya Pradesh on 17 Sept 2022.
The leopards brought from Namibia a few weeks ago have been the biggest attraction of this park. When leopards came to India, the Prime Minister of the country himself released them in Kuno National Park on the occasion of his birthday. Since then, the number of people visiting this park to see leopards is also continuously increasing.
After the arrival of leopards, India became the first country in the world with the existence of five species of ‘big cats’ – tiger, lion, leopard, snow leopard, and cheetah.
History of Kuno National Park
The world-famous Kuno National Park extends to Sheopur and Morena districts in Madhya Pradesh. This park was established as a wild sanctuary in around 1981.
