Achalgarh Fort, located in the Sirohi district of Rajasthan, is located about 11 km north of Mount Abu, the only famous hill station in Rajasthan. Achalgarh Village Mount Abu, Rajasthan is a picturesque village famous for Achalgarh Fort, Achaleshwar Temple, and historical Jain temples.
History and Architecture of Achalgarh Fort
According to historians, this fort was originally built by the rulers of the Paramara dynasty, but it was reconstructed and modernized by Maharana Kumbha in 1452.
The Achalgarh Fort was one of the 32 forts built during the reign of Maharana Kumbha. The Achalgarh Fort area is completely surrounded by Mount Abu which is one of the most popular hill stations in North India.
The fort has two gates, one for the entrance to the outer premises of the Hanumanpol Fort, it has two towers of large granite blocks, and the second for the entrance to the Ganeshpol inner complex, on these doors are placed the statues Hanuman and Ganesh.
Inside this fort are the ruins of Maharana Kumbha’s palace, Okha Rani’s palace, grain stores, soldiers’ housing houses, huge water tanks, Sawan Bhadon lake, turrets built by the Paramaras to inform about the danger, etc.
A famous Shiva temple in the premises of the fort, Achaleshwar Mahadev Temple where Lord Shiva’s thumb is worshipped. An idol of a Nandi is also installed in the center of the Achaleshwar Mahadev temple complex which is made up of 5 metals (bronze, gold, zinc, copper, and brass), and weighs more than 4 tonnes.
Inside the fort there is also Mandakini Lake and a Jain temple which was probably built in 1513, this fort was a part of Mewar state before it came under the supervision of the Government of India.
